I couldn't agree more. The only people in the state of NC that supports dog hunting for deer is actually the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission and the dog hunters themselves. At a recent public appearance, the new Executive Director, Gordon Myers, actually said that "...we will protect the 'tradition' of hunting...".

"Tradition" is the current "politically correct" term used to define dog hunting. But it is only a smoke screen from a private and civilian organization to "protect" the activity of dog hunting from those who pay in a lot of money. Heck, when called "tradition" or "traditional" it even sounds good enough to actually justify dog hunting, but in reality dog hunting is not even traditional.

Idea

Hunting is the tradition, not the manner of hunting, like using dogs.

Its a darn shame that the executive director concurs with dog hunting. I presume he has a vented intrest, probably a dog hunter himself. Even for me at the age of 30 tradition is in no way synonymous with dog hunting. I just moved to raleigh in the last year and have been deer hunting in NC for one season. I only have 40 acres in louisburg nc, seems to be the dog hunting capital, and have fallen victim several times to a pack of mangy muts chasing my deer off my property, while being in the stand. I have seen small spikes,doe, button buck and small 4-6 pointers run past my stand with a pack of dogs in trail. Once the deer are pushed off my property it sounded like a dove shoot and I could hear atvs running up and down the property to catch up to the herd!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have put a lot of time and money preparing my land for a prime location for deer but nothing can prepare me for this eastern NC dog hunting frenzy. I guess a fence is on my near further or...... my local taxidermist might be stuffing a walker or beagle in my future.Unfortunately I have many more stories of horriable hunts than good ones in NC because of unethical hunting. Dog the other white meat...maybe.

hunter ethics issue should be important to any hunter wether the hunter is seasoned or novice. The future of our sport might ultimately depend on it. Granted, ethics are left up to the hunter but can influence the non-hunting public. With a small number of our population who purchase a hunting license the microscope always looked closely at hunting period.

Ethical hunting must be practiced by all even if it is lawful. Ethics are simple difference between right and wrong. I dont think ethical hunters would trespass or poach on some elses land? should dogs apply to this being an extension of the hunter and in direct obedieance of the hunter. Or should the hunter be fully responsible for the dogs when they trespass. I have a zero tolerance when it comes to humans trespassing and dogs. What do I do,call my congressmen, call the game warden who shows up a day late when the dogs are gone. Under the law, any man or women can get a license,and be a law binding hunter but still can be a poor sportsman. Dont be a bad sportsman and help revoke dog hunting.

Don't do any of these. Don't call the game warden as there is not a law against this. Don't call your congressman because it is not Federal jurisdiction. He/She will not know what you are talking about, probably.

Call your county commissioner(s). They will get the ball rolling to enact a local law for your county only. See, local laws are the only laws that restrict hunting. This must be done on a local level since there is no statewide agency to watch over hunting. Hence, no statewide laws that restrict hunting... especially dogs!
